Molecular-level similarity search brings computing to DNA data storage

Abstract As global demand for digital storage capacity grows, technologies based on synthetic DNA have emerged as a dense and durable alternative to traditional media. Existing approaches leverage robust error correcting codes precise molecular mechanisms reliably retrieve specific files from large databases. Typically, are retrieved using pre-specified key, analogous filename. However, these lack the ability perform more complex computations over stored data, such similarity search: e.g., finding images that look similar an image of interest without prior knowledge their file names. Here we demonstrate technique executing search DNA-based database 1.6 million images. Queries implemented hybridization probes, key step in our approach was learn image-to-sequence encoding ensuring queries preferentially bind targets representing visually Experimental results show implementation performs comparably state-of-the-art silico algorithms search.
